Lumbar spondylosis is a term that refers to the natural degeneration of the spine in the lumbar region, which is the lower part of the back. This condition is typically seen in older adults and results from the wear and tear of the cartilage, discs, and bones in the vertebral column over many years. Common symptoms include lower back pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility, which can affect daily activities. In some cases, the degeneration can lead to the narrowing of the spinal canal, known as spinal stenosis, which can press on the spinal nerves and cause pain or numbness in the legs. Factors that can exacerbate lumbar spondylosis include obesity, physical inactivity, poor posture, and repetitive strain on the back. Although lumbar spondylosis is a progressive condition, its symptoms can be managed with physical therapy, medications to reduce pain and inflammation, lifestyle changes, and in severe cases, surgery. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and ergonomic adjustments at work and home can help manage the symptoms and improve quality of life.
